The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore

Last week I decided to read two books at the same time. I don't usually do this, but both books caught my eye and I thought "sure, why the hell not?" One of these books was The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore. This book is a sweet love story about two teenagers from families of traveling performers. The families are rivals and absolutely hate each other. The main characters, Cluck (a Courbeau) and Lace (a Paloma) unexpectedly fall in love and the novel follows their journey. There's a very Romeo/Juliet-esque feel to the story, but without all the killing. There's also a touch of fantasy as each family is known for these wonderful acts they perform. The Palomas are exquisite swimmers who perform as mermaids and the Corbeaus perform in the trees as birds.

The writing is quite charming and the youth of the characters are emphasized through their actions.

Cluck and Lace are two young people who think they understand the rivalry between their families, but the more they interact with each other the more you realize they don't know anything. They are both stubborn in an almost arrogant way, yet it is clear that they each just lack a certain type of confidence. All of this makes it more believable that they are 17-18ish as depicted. I find that YA books typically have young characters who actually act a lot older than they are and I really liked that McLemore kept her characters true to their age.

I would describe The Weight of the Feathers as a modern-day novella. It doesn't take place in some far off land like other fantasy YA novels. Instead the story set in a recognizable America. McLemore does a great job of seamlessly weaving fantasy into an already existing environment. One of my favorite quotes from this book which I had to include was this: "He thought Kraft Singles contained, within a few square inches, all American evils."

If you're looking for a YA book that's not super cheesy or super "ugh-teenagers" then I highly suggest reading The Weight of the Feathers which is available September 15th!

*I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
