#TBT - The Missing Piece by Shel Silverstein

Can it be called a series if I only do it once every 6 weeks? Sure, why not :) This week's TBT (book edition) is Shel Silverstein's The Missing Piece! I was recently gifted this book by a friend of mine because she knows of my love for Shel Silverstein. I think his poetry is part of every kid's life in some way, but as most things go you don't realize the meaning behind his words until you get much older. Kudos to Shel Silverstein for teaching life lessons in subtle and beautiful way.

The main theme to this book is individualism. The little guy on the cover of the book goes through life searching for his missing piece. Throughout this journey he's singing a cute little song, meeting different animals, and enjoying the smell of flowers. He's having a pretty good time. Eventually he comes upon a piece that he thinks is his perfect fit, but it doesn't want to be claimed! He comes across more pieces, some that are too small and some that are too big. Finally he finds his perfect piece! While he's having the time of his life with his missing he's also missing out on life. He's rolling so fast now that he found his piece that he can't even stop to smell the flowers. Even his song isn't same. At the end of the book he lets go of his piece and goes on to enjoy life.

The writing and drawings are so simple and the story is great. It also speaks to that whole journey vs. destination thing you hear about all the time. I think that Shel Silverstein is a great read no matter what age you are. If you haven't read a Shel Silverstein poem or book since you were a kid then definitely pick one up now. You'll be impressed by what you learn.

Read on,

Saudia
